Darien
A Novel
A name is not what your family was. It is what somebody in your family did, and whether anybody is still willing to do it.
Major Sam Alexander, a West Point Black Hawk pilot, comes home to Darien, Georgia, in an election year and is drawn into the race for mayor. Braided with nearly three centuries of her Highland Scots family, it is a saga of a shrimping family, a coastal town, and a standard set in 1739.

Read the opening
The tide turned at 4:52 in the morning and for fourteen minutes the Altamaha did not move at all.
It happened twice a day and nobody had ever come out to see it. There was nothing to see. The river simply arrived at the end of its argument with the ocean and stopped, and for a little while the water in the delta lay flat and unmoving as a poured floor, holding the dark, holding the stars, holding a hundred thousand acres of cordgrass upside down. Then it began to run the other way, and the whole enormous machine reversed itself, and no one had to be told.
